Cervical Cancer Treatment During Pregnancy

Posted in: Cervix Cancer by Cancer Healer

Cervical cancer during pregnancy can create a tough situation for doctors as well as patients. The following blog elaborates on the same.

Cervical cancer in pregnant women leaves them wondering whether to wait, interrupt or treat the problem right away. Medical practitioners, as a result, have been busier than ever trying to assess all the clinical guidelines and innovations in the treatment of cervical cancer.

Cervical cancer during pregnancy, fortunately, is not very common. It still happens and that is, to say the least, extremely disappointing. Needless to say, all the excitement and happiness of an expecting woman is likely to get shattered when she comes to know that she has been affected by this problem. Having a suitable treatment for the same happens to be a major challenge for women as most of them desire to preserve the pregnancy. For pre-invasive or invasive carcinomas on the other hand, delaying treatment is a better option. Luckily, women can now have any type of cervical cancer treatment in India, depending on histology, disease stage and gestational age. Before any treatment, however, extensive counseling sessions regarding the risks associated with maternity and foetus need to be conducted.

Mentioned below are some of the guidelines that need to be adhered to during cervical cancer treatment of pregnant women:

Strict Observation

Keeping the patient under strict observation is a top priority while treating pre-invasive disease. Cervical lesions are not influenced by pregnancy and thus the pre-invasive diseases are least likely to develop into invasive form. It is safe to perform directed biopsies and colposcopy during pregnancy. Endocervical curettage, however, is not advisable at this stage. Symptoms such as increase in vascularity and hypertrophia are often confused with signs of cervical dysplasia. Colposcopy thus needs to be performed under the supervision of experienced practitioners. Results this way, will turn out to be much more accurate.

Early Identification of Symptoms

Cervical cancer symptoms usually get overshadowed by other pregnancy troubles, resulting in delays from patient’s side as well as physician’s side. This can happen during higher stages of cervical cancer as well. It is thus imperative that screening tests for the disease are performed right from the starting phase of pregnancy. Earlier diagnosis means early treatment and early relief from the problem.
